Trayvon Martin Protesters in D.C. Call For Political Action
Hundreds of people from all walks of life marched in Washington D. C. Sunday evening to honor slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
The crowd gathered at 6:00 p.m. at Malcolm X Park, many expressing anger, pain, and frustration about the verdict.
The crowd grew to about 900 people as they marched from the park, also known as Meridian Hill Park, and down U Street, a major route lined with bars and restaurants. The marchers completely blocked traffic in one lane, and D.C. police stood by keeping them to one side of the street. Emotions were running high as people shouted, “no justice, no peace!” and other slogans, but the rally was completely peaceful.”…Read the rest here.
John Paulk: “Pray the Gay Away” Poster Child Announces He is Still Gay, Truly Sorry
John Paulk, an icon of the “ex-gay” movement who long claimed to be “cured” of his homosexuality, has officially announced he is still gay and is “truly, truly” sorry for the harm he caused.
In a formal, public apology Wednesday, Paulk said, “For the better part of ten years, I was an advocate and spokesman for what’s known as the ‘ex-gay’ movement, where we declared that sexual orientation could be changed through a close-knit relationship with God, intensive therapy and strong determination. At the time, I truly believed that it would happen. And while many things in my life did change as a Christian, my sexual orientation did not.”
Paulk’s new view that so-called “reparative therapy” is harmful echoes the opinion of every major medical and psychiatric association in the U.S., which view “gay cures” as “inappropriate, unethical and inhumane.”…Read the rest here.
Arizona Bathroom Bill: Let Us Pee Without Showing ID
If Arizona Representative, John Kavanagh has his way, soon police might be able to throw you behind bars for using the “wrong” restroom.
Kavanagh’s proposed amendment to bill S.B.1432 would allow police to stop anyone they suspect is not using the public bathroom, shower, or changing room that matches the sex on their birth certificate. The accused would have to show proof of sex, and if they don’t have ID or if the sex on their ID doesn’t match their gender identity, the offender could face up to six months jail and a $2,500 fine. The legislation, which unabashedly targets transgender people, will be heard Wednesday.
As if government in our bedrooms weren’t enough, Kavanagh is trying to bring it into our bathrooms as well.
Public bathrooms have long been a point of discomfort and even danger…Read the rest here.
Why Blaming Rihanna for Staying with Chris Brown is so Wrong
This particular Confession Bear put me over the edge today. For the uninformed: On the four-year anniversary of Chris Brown’s bloodying Rihanna’s face, the two snuggled together at the Grammys. Days earlier, she blew him kisses at his probation hearing where he was in court for falsifying community service documents — service Brown was supposed to complete for beating her. Unsurprisingly, commenters and columnists are again dismissing Rihanna as stupid, essentially blaming her for her own abuse. Look, despite her celebrity status, Rihanna’s on- and off-again affair with Brown is in many ways very typical of an abusive relationship. On average, domestic violence survivors attempt to leave seven times before getting out for good. Leaving is far more complicated…Read the rest here.
Obama Humans Rights Violations: We Must Demand Accountability in the Encore Term
As the confetti settles and election euphoria wanes, progressives must concentrate on the next task: holding their own accountable. President Barack Obama’s first term was in many ways a disaster for civil and human rights, yet even the most vehement rights defenders have barely mentioned the extrajudicial killings of Americans, the deaths of innocent civilians in the drone war, or indefinite detention. Yes, Obama ended Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, defended free speech on the internet, and bolstered socioeconomic rights with his health care plan — for this he deserves great credit. But supporters…Read the rest here.
(Violent) Sex Sells: The Disturbing Trend of Glamorizing Sexual Violence
Sexualized images of women in pain–often beaten or dead–are nothing new. The fashion world has a disturbing obsession with the theme, and advertising and music videos are also guilty. Noted scumbag (who moonlights as a fashion photographer) Terry Richardson recently did a shoot with actress Lindsay Lohan. The photos depict her looking vulnerable and seductive with a gun in her head. His concept isn’t unique–in 2010 Tyler Shields did very a similar gunplay shoot with Lohan, who posed with a pistol in her mouth and blood splattered on the wall…Read the rest here.
Alabama Illegal Immigrant Crackdown Destroys Farm Business
On Sunday, the Associated Press reported worker shortages have prompted some Alabama farmers who grow labor-intensive produce to plant less, rather than have crops rot in the fields again this year. Last fall Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a tough law combating illegal immigration, which prompted undocumented workers to flee the state. Few locals will perform the grueling work of picking crops, and farmers stuck in a agricultural system built on illegal labor are struggling to find replacements before their produce rots. Alabama’s situation is not unique. Georgia passed a similar immigration law in 2011. When undocumented workers fled…Read the rest here.
